Course organiser for 20092010: Dr Sebnem Susam-Sarajeva
The course is taught in the second semester, two hours per week for 5 weeks. It offers the students the opportunity to gain research and bibliographical skills specific to the discipline of translation studies. The students learn what counts as a research question in the discipline, how to formulate a worthwhile topic, and which methodologies are available for them. The course is the students’ crucial preparation for the dissertation stage and enables the students to obtain knowledge and understanding in particular areas of their own interest. The course can also act as a gateway to further studies within the discipline, such as PhD in Translation Studies.
The course is assessed by a research proposal of 4000 words, which will be the basis for the student’s dissertation. Students will give an oral presentation of their proposals towards the end of the semester before submission.
In addition to the proposal, the students are expected to attend the guest lectures jointly organised by the Translation Studies Graduate Programme, University of Edinburgh and the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies, Heriot Watt University. Attendance at these lectures is compulsory. Students who do not attend 6 out of 8 of these guest lectures without prior permission from the course organiser may not be deemed to have qualified to proceed to writing up their proposals.
