The course is taught in the first semester, two hours per week for ten weeks.
The course introduces some of the major concepts in translation theory and focuses on their application to translation practice. It deals with issues of equivalence, formal properties of texts as objects for analysis at linguistic, semantic, discourse, and pragmatic levels, and emphasises the importance of a functional approach to translation practice, and of descriptive and sociological approaches to translation research. It also provides an introduction to audiovisual translation studies and to interpreting. Further issues in translation studies are taken up in the option course Translation Studies 2: Themes and Issues.
Students will be provided with a comprehensive overview of the discipline of translation studies, raising their awareness of both the diversity of possible approaches to translation and the relationships between these approaches.
The course is assessed by a translation and commentary essay of 4000 words. Students will give an oral presentation of their essays towards the end of the semester before submission.
