Translation Studies 2: Themes and Issues

Course organiser for 2011/2012: Dr Şebnem Susam-Sarajeva

The course is taught in the second semester, two hours per week for ten weeks.

The course covers some of the important developments in and recent contributions to translation studies since the 1990s. The approaches discussed are often ramifications from descriptive translation studies and/or results of the discipline’s interest in cultural studies, comparative literature and literary theory. The issues addressed (e.g. translation and gender, religion, power, postcolonialism, society, conflict, internet) will therefore also be of interest for the students of other interdisciplinary programmes within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures. For these students, attendance at Translation Studies 1: Methodology course is NOT a prerequisite, although the two courses are clearly linked.

The course combines lectures and seminars. Usually the first half of the sessions will be the former, while the second half will be allocated to group work and general discussion. The students are therefore strongly encouraged to keep on top of the weekly reading assignments.

The course is assessed by a 4000 words essay.
